Body doubling, explained

Nothing about the task changes. Someone is simply there, and suddenly it is possible.

What it is

Body doubling means doing a task in the presence of another person who is not helping. They do not supervise, coach, or check on you. They are in the room, or on a silent video call, doing their own thing. That is the entire method, and for a lot of ADHD people it is the difference between four days of avoidance and forty minutes of work.

Why it works

No single explanation covers it, but the useful pieces are:

Getting the effect alone

Most people cannot summon a friend on demand at nine on a Tuesday. Partial substitutes, roughly in order of how well they tend to work:

What breaks it

Body doubling stops working the moment it becomes surveillance. If the other person asks how it is going, checks your progress, or you suspect they are judging your pace, the mechanism inverts and you get the anxiety without the help. The instruction to give a partner is simple: be there, do your own thing, say nothing about my work.

A realistic expectation

It will not make the task enjoyable. It makes it startable, which is the part that was actually blocked. That is a smaller claim than most productivity advice makes and it is the reason this one keeps working.

A timer you can watch instead of read

Sundae turns a focus session into an ice cream that visibly melts, in real time, on screen and on your Lock Screen. Step away and it just naps: nothing withers and nothing is lost. There is a working one on the home page you can try in your browser, no install.
